Category: Let's talk
HI all. It has been reported by the BBC in the UK today that certain councils in the UK have banned people from calling christmas lights christmas lights, in case they offend other faiths. They favour the terms winter lights or celebretee lights. I also heard that piggy banks, the iconic children's first money box, cannot be called a piggy bank any more in case it offends members of some religions. Has the world gone completely baserc?
Um ... never heard that but it seems very, very strange to me. You can not force the whole world to suddenly find a new word for PIggy bank after they have been using it for almost all their life. This is ridiculous. This is not political correct but totally exagerated.
it's silly! in class today we sent an email to lambeth cansel and i think they should act on it
I hate political correct shit. Call a spade a spade.
Indeed I feel there is far too much sensitivity connected with religion,if people were secure in their faith, they would not be offended by the mention of piggy banks ect. It's ludicrous and I just have to laugh at such a massive waste of time.
Back in the day we would have a couple of weeks off at school for Christmas Holiday and then the same in the Spring called Easter Hoilday break... now those same weeks off are called Winter and Spring breaks. Also there are some Football Teams with an Indian reference like for example: The Redskins. Some object saying this is offensive while others consider it honerable. Guess it all depends upon where one is in their frame of thot.
Just as an additional note that here in this area (Michigan-Detroit Metro) the term Winter Festival of Lights has been in use for a few years so as to recognize The Jewish Lighting of Lights as well as the Lights of KWANZAA as well as the traditional Christmas Lights.
It's all gone a bit barmy in my view.
My question is, di actual people complain because they felt they were not being recognized in Christmas celebrations, or are these groups doing this just in case somebody might complain or worse, the deadly lawsuit! OK, I understand people want to recognize and be sensitive towards non-majority traditions and groups, but I feel this is trying too hard to make a good gesture. I never understood what actual good this whole political correctness mess has done over the years. I think it's made people so sensitive they're afraid of lawsuits by anyone who feels alienated or slighted. That's it! The human race needs a good skin-thickening! LOL!
I think political correctness is just stupid. There was even something said about calling a manhole a manhole. Someone said it should be called a person hole. Person hole? yuk, how dumb. call a manhole a manhole, blind blind deaf deaf etc.
wonderwoman
Again, it's this idea that offending a person is the worst thing you can do to them. Funny, I always thought the worst thing you could do to a person is murder them, but I guess I just ain't into all this here new-fangled thinkin' the young whipper-snappers are doin' nowadays. LOL!
Join the club on that one, and I'm only 28. I'm blind, not visually impaired, I'm a woman, not female or whatever else women libbers want to call it; though guess I'm that to, LOL. We can't say it's all the religious sects pushing for political correctness, but anyone who doesn't like the way something sounds. There are those who don't like the sounds of cunt, pusy or whatever, so, it is now only politically correct to say vagina or whatever...There are those who don't like the sounds of man hole; think this stims from women libbers, so, now it must be called a person hole? My god, let's grow up and worry about the murders, rapes and other shit going on instead of concerning ourselves that not everyone in the world uses the same phraises. That's just part of life, differences I mean, and there are a hell of a lot more serious things out there to worry about then the words I choose to use to communicate. You don't like the way something sounds translate it to something your comfortable with and go on with life, or just ignore the person, but that last idea isn't practical in the real world.
Wow. I don't think I can add to that, so, here here.
well, everyone. have a rama hana quansmiss
I agree with all of you I have become moree and more frustrated by the inane nanny state that Britian has become. While on the other hand we have the assault of an innocent 80 yr old disabled man who was legally manhandled by 6ft plus thugs, for shouting nonsense during a politician's speech. The juxtaposition of that is enough to make you think the government had lost the heid.
I work in an independent living center, so we have "how to be politically correct" posters up and most I agree with like not saying wheelchair bound because they are more bound without their chair sitting and stuck than with it, but this whole person with a disability instead of saying they're disabled... it's just more of a mouthful. Half the time I don't even know what to call myself, legally blind? Visually impaired? I've been using blink a lot lately and I'm just fine with that!
HI Melodica. I'll bet those politically correct posters are huge aren't they? yes, I have the same issues with what to call myself. I had problems signing up with a service from a well known communications company, and had to contact their tec support team as the site wasn't accessible, or most of it was, apart from the adition of a verification immige! what a pest those graphical immages are! Anway, they hadn't provided an audio equivelent so I had to talk to a customer service rep. She couldn't understand that I was totally blind, I told her I was blind, and her question to me was, are you partially sighted? no! Ah well, another rant over with. Oh, by the way, this topic has kind of exploded, I didn't think it would. *smile*
I mean we have the word piggy bank as well in German (of course in German. And fortunately nobody complained and said we have to call it differently. But - in general - it#s just stupid.
The problem stems from not asking the disabled community what they would like to be called. I do know some who hate all terminology and say I'd be happier if you just use my name, which is understandable. This will probably kill the thread stone dead, but I'll go ahead anyway. My mate Stevie has a black T-shirt with the word SPAZ! in large, Red, gothic letters, he was told in no uncertain terms, never to wear it again, by a mother who's son has CP, because he felt insulted; however, my friend Kenny also with CP, thinks its great crack..so how do we agree on terminology if the disabled cant come to a consensus.
I found it interesting Dobin that the woman asked if you were partially sighted when you said you were blind. I have found that most sighted people assume you are totally blind when you use the word blind. And regarding your remarks Goblin, I probably would think the T-shirt funny even if I did have CP. We all have to stop taking ourselves too seriously. But you're right, if blind people can't agree on what we as a group want to be called, then how can we expect other people to know what to call us. We just have to stop being so easily offended. If an individual doesn't like a term that another individual uses, then talk to that person about it. But don't start a nationwide protest.
I want to know exactly which people come up with these politically correct ideas so I can find them and tell them they're not working? Hahahaha! I do believe people just come up with these ideas and do not consult us at all and it just causes more confusion and general discomfort. Do these people really think that somebody's natural response would be to just start shouting out insults and epithets when they see somebody different? And this person-first thing, although I can understand why some folks believe in it, just sounds awkward and a bit condescending. But some folks believe that the sighted and able-bodied think anyone with a disability is not fully human so people need reminding. Hmmph!
Labyrinth I couldn't agree more. Unfortunately a large number of mindless eejits in Scotland, do indeed shout out loud at anyone different, hence the T-shirt to call their bluff. The sad thing is people do believe that we are not fully human.
I agree, I think political correctness is a complete waste of time. Anyway, if other faiths are offended by a country's word useage to denote a tradition, then they really shouldn't be living in this country. No wonder, in Britain there are problems between British people and ethnic groups.
I think there is a reason the phrase, "when in Rome, do as the Romans do," came about. On the subject of being pc I heard that Britain is considering changing "failed," to "defered success," or some such thing to refer to someone failing a class or grade level. That's quite ridiculously amusing imo.

Deferred Success! I'll give you deferred success! there are a lot of do-gooders in Britain, who like to medal in things that don't concern them, including government affairs or whatever, but they really don't have an ounce of obvious intelegence, these are probably the sort of people who come up with this politicallly correct rubbish. oh yeah, and that goes for Tony Blair and his government, he appears to be one of the reasons Britain is in such a mess.
Tazz you are dead right and his worst crime, showing abject cowardice and greed by not standing up to Bush prior to the Iraq war, Blair allowed himself to be seduced by the corrupt power emenating from the white house...What a waste of space he is. IceQueen hmm, I'm not sure the When In Rome philosophy is altogether a good idea, you only have to look at the violence in France to see the pitfalls in that.
